COMMUNITY PROFILE: The Heart of
North Carolina
Located in the
geographic center of North Carolina between Raleigh and Greensboro and
the fasting growing area in the state. Good schools, a rural lifestyle, moderate
temperatures, recreational opportunities, a sense of history and a good
local economy make Chatham County a desirable location to call home.
Pittsboro,
Fearrington Village, Governor's Club and new communities near Jordan Lake
have become home to many who work in Chapel Hill, Cary and the Research
Triangle. Before all the residential development, Chatham county was a
community of farmers and mill workers who lived in rural communities.

as poultry, dairy and wood, generates industrial activity in the county
and accounts for almost one third of the total Chatham County income,
and more than More than 60 percent of Chatham County's land area is in
timber. Strong economic conditions in nearby areas such as Raleigh,
Durham, Chapel Hill – the Research Triangle -- have a strong influence
on the growth of the county's population and economy and employ many
Chatham County residents. The county’s moderately priced land and highly
trained workforce create a stable foundation for economic progress.
Chatham County ranks fourth in 100 North Carolina counties in per capita
income and first (out of 100in median family income.
Since 1989, six
new schools have been built in the region.
The system boasts one computer for every five students, offers Internet
access in each classroom, and provides an online library catalog and
circulation system.
With festivals and events like the Piedmont Farm Tour, Haw River Festival,
Silk Hope Old Fashion Farmers Day, Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of
Music and Dance in Silk Hope, NC Chatham County Fair, Deep River Park
Turkey Regatta, kiln openings, art shows, golf courses, parks, lakes,
rivers, farmers’ markets, a winery, and Horseshoe Battle Reenactment,
residents are never at a loss for something to do.

ATTRACTIONS
The Rocks - Gemstone Mining
Located just
minutes from Pittsboro, all ages can experience the fun and excitement of
gemstone mining and gold panning. On-site gift shop where you can purchase
mineral specimens, custom jewelry and more.
Jordan Lake
is a
13,900-acre reservoir in Wake and Chatham County that offers boating, camping,
fishing, swimming and a full-service commercial marina. It is the largest
summertime home of the bald eagle in the Eastern United States. There are nine
recreation areas in various locations around the lake.
The Antiques Shops of
Pittsboro
offer more than 25,000 square feet of antiques in the quaint county seat of
Pittsboro, as well as cafes and specialty shops.
Fearrington Village
is located on the site of an 18th century dairy farm outside Chapel Hill. The
vibrant village is filled with unique shops, restaurants, beautiful gardens, and
a world class country inn.
The
Carnivore Preservation
Trust in Pittsboro
provides
sanctuary to a diverse community of animals and promotes conservation by
educating people about the importance of the environment. The preserve, which is
open to the public, is home to exotic
species including Romeo, the 600-pound tiger; Pena, an endangered snow leopard;
and Jellybean, a white Bengal tiger.
Bicycle Trails abound in Chatham County with 198 miles of
bicycle trails that cover lightly-traveled country roads to connect the towns,
crossroad communities, and points of interest in Chatham County.
