COMMUNITY PROFILE: The Ideal University Town
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's oldest public university, opened its doors in 1795. Over the past 200 years the university has garnered a worldwide reputation, and a small city has grown up around it that reflects the varied interests and lifestyles of the students, faculty and alumni, who come from all over the world.

That diversity makes for a mix of eclectic entertainment, a multitude of ethnic restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, cultural centers, museums and housing that ranges from condos to large estates in Chapel Hill and neighboring Carrboro.

Most recently the A & E channel recognized Chapel Hill as the #2 city in their “Top Ten Cities to Have it All,” and Money magazine rated the town as the #1 “Best Place to Live in the South.” Although home to more than 28,000 students, Chapel Hill and Carrboro have many benefits and opportunities for retirees, including state-of-the-art medical facilities. Carrboro recently was ranked one of the top five places to retire by U.S. News and World Reports.

The Varsity Theatre is an icon of downtown Chapel Hill. Perhaps it's the magical power of the tunnel of lights leading you into the larger theater that has kept the theater alive. Or it could be the exotic confections and microbrewed beers at the concession stand. We'll never know... but you can count on the Varsity surviving multiplexes to entertain us for another 50 years.
